Caspar saw what was happening and ordered a retreat.  Whirling their horses, the detail began a mad gallop back toward the bridge, Caspar bringing up the rear.  Indians closed in around them, more appearing every second.  Caspar ordered a volley with the Smith carbines that cut a swathe through the front ranks, but there was no time to reload before the next wave was upon them.
